To learn how to add a Leadbox to a Leadpage, it helps to know that Leadboxes are now simply called pop-ups. Leadpages has two kinds. On-page pop-ups belong to one page or site and open when a visitor clicks a button, image or text link. Standalone pop-ups are built separately, published with a snippet of code, and can open on a click, after a time delay or on exit intent on almost any website. This guide covers both, with steps for the Classic Builder, notes for the newer app, and fixes for the common problems.
Leadpages Pop-Ups in Brief
- On a Leadpages page: hover over a button and click Edit Pop-Up, or use Add Click Event, then Open a Pop-Up, then Create New (Classic Builder).
- On any other site: build a standalone pop-up under Conversion Tools, then Pop-Ups, click Get Code and paste the snippet.
- Triggers: text link, button, image, time delay or exit intent.
- Mobile: click-triggered pop-ups work; timed and exit pop-ups do not show on mobile devices.
- New Leadpages app: a Pop-up block in the editor's Add tab, and a Pop-ups area in the sidebar.
How to Add a Pop-Up to a Button on Your Leadpage

Most Leadpages templates already include an on-page pop-up attached to the main button, so the first job is often editing rather than creating. These steps are for the Classic Builder.
- Edit an existing pop-up: hover over the button and click Edit Pop-Up, or click the button and then the link icon in its settings.
- Create a new one: drag a button, image or text widget onto the page, hover over it and choose Add Click Event, then Open a Pop-Up, then Create New.
- Set up the form inside the pop-up: choose the integration, edit the fields and set what happens after submission. The forms guide covers each tab.
- Name the pop-up under Settings in the left sidebar so you can tell several apart.
- Preview the page and click the trigger to check that the pop-up opens, then update the page.
A page can hold up to 24 on-page pop-ups, and Leadpages suggests deleting unused ones because many pop-ups can affect loading. To remove one, hover over its button, click Edit Click Event, pick the pop-up and click Delete Pop-Up. Leadpages counts a pop-up as a two-step opt-in, because the form appears only after the click; a form placed straight on the page is one-step. For button styling and other click actions, see buttons, links and timers.
In the New Leadpages App
The editor's Add tab includes a Pop-up block described as pop-ups that open from your page, alongside Form and Button blocks, and the sidebar has a Pop-ups area under Create. You can also ask Piper, the AI builder, to create a pop-up. The new app's help articles do not yet give step-by-step pop-up instructions, so check the block's Settings tab for its trigger and form options.
Create a Standalone Pop-Up for Other Websites
- Go to Conversion Tools, then Pop-Ups, and click Create New Pop-Up.
- Name it and click Start Building. New pop-ups start with some text and a form.
- Edit the content with widgets, and keep it short: one offer, a few fields and one button.
- Set up the form integration, fields and follow-up action, then click Publish.
- Choose a trigger: plain text link, button, image, time delay or exit intent. Timed pop-ups can wait for a set time or number of page views, and timed and exit pop-ups can wait a number of days before showing again.
- Click Get Code, copy the whole snippet and paste it where the trigger should appear on your site.
The snippet has two parts: a JavaScript loader and the trigger itself. The loader only needs to appear once per page, even if that page uses several pop-ups. Timed and exit triggers are invisible, so their code can sit almost anywhere on the page. Editing the pop-up's content and clicking Update changes it everywhere it is published, but changing trigger options produces new code that you must paste again.

On-page pop-ups open on a click only. For a timed or exit-intent pop-up on a Leadpages page, use a standalone pop-up:
- Publish the standalone pop-up with the time delay or exit intent trigger and copy its code.
- Classic Builder: open the page, select the Settings tab, go to Analytics and paste the code into Head Section Tracking Code. An HTML widget works too.
- Page Studio: open Settings, expand Scripts and paste into Head Section Tracking Code.
- Save and update the page, then test on a desktop browser.
Opt-ins from a standalone pop-up are counted in that pop-up's analytics, not the page's. Leadpages also says standalone pop-ups cannot be attached to existing buttons on its own landing pages, so use on-page pop-ups for click triggers there.
Link to a Pop-Up and Use It Inside Content

In-content opt-ins: publish a pop-up as a text link or image and paste the code inside a blog post, next to the paragraph it relates to. The same pop-up can be published with several triggers, so one form can sit at the end of a post and in a sidebar.
A plain link: Leadpages' advanced publishing article explains how to build a direct pop-up URL from your Leadpages domain and the pop-up's ID, the value after data-leadbox-popup= in its code. On its own, that link opens the form in a new tab. Add the script part of the code to the page's head and it opens as an overlay instead.
Custom triggers: with the script on the page, adding the data-leadbox-popup attribute to any element, such as a menu item or image, turns it into a trigger. Leadpages cannot troubleshoot custom code on your site, so test carefully. Page Studio pages use the pop-up URL with an element's Open external URL action.
Publish Pop-Ups to WordPress and Other Sites
Any platform that accepts HTML and JavaScript can host the code. In WordPress, paste it into a Custom HTML block in the block editor, the Text tab of the classic editor, or a Text widget in a sidebar. Leadpages says the current WordPress plugin cannot pull pop-ups, and recommends a header and footer code plugin for site-wide timed or exit pop-ups; the legacy Connector plugin had a global pop-up setting. More detail is in the Leadpages WordPress plugin guide, and site builders such as Squarespace and Wix are covered in Leadpages with other platforms. To compare dedicated WordPress opt-in tools, see WordPress lead generation plugins.
To unpublish, remove the code from your site. Deleting the pop-up inside Leadpages does not remove it from pages where it is embedded. To find forgotten code, view the page source and search for leadbox.
Leadpages Pop-Up Not Working: Fixes
- Nothing appears: check the full snippet is in the page source and that your platform allows JavaScript.
- Opens in a new tab: only the URL was used, the code was pasted into a visual editor instead of an HTML or text editor, or other code corrupted it. Republish and copy fresh code.
- Timed or exit pop-up missing: test on a desktop, since these do not run on mobile, and check for a long delay or a days-between-showings setting.
- Works in one browser only: clear the cache and test in another browser or device.
- Video restarts when the pop-up opens: Leadpages publishes a short script fix in its pop-up publishing article.
- Required field you cannot remove: fields required by your email service cannot be overridden, so change them in that service.
On mobile, standalone pop-ups open as a separate page at a Leadpages URL to support older devices, which is expected behavior. For broader opt-in strategy, see lead capture pages.

Are Leadboxes and Leadpages pop-ups the same thing?
Yes. Leadboxes was the original name for Leadpages' pop-up forms, and the help center now calls them pop-ups. Older tutorials and the code itself still use the word leadbox, which is why the publishing snippet contains it.
Can I put a timed Leadbox on a Leadpage?
Yes. Create a standalone pop-up, publish it with a time delay or exit intent, and paste its code into your page's Head Section Tracking Code under Settings, then Analytics (Classic) or Settings, then Scripts (Page Studio). Timed and exit pop-ups do not show on mobile devices.
How do I link to a Leadbox?
On a Leadpages page, attach the pop-up to a button, image or text with a click event. Elsewhere, paste the text link, button or image code from the pop-up's Publishing Options. A bare pop-up URL also works but opens the form in a new tab instead of over the page.
Can I use a Leadbox for an in-content lead generator?
Yes. Publish a standalone pop-up as a text link or image and paste the code inside a blog post, so readers click a line such as Get the checklist to open the form. Leadpages notes you can publish the same pop-up with several triggers, for example in a post and in a sidebar.
How do I remove the country code from a Leadpages phone field?
Leadpages' help center does not document a country-code setting. In the Classic form widget, fields come from your email service, so check the phone field's format there. Otherwise delete the phone field, make it optional, or replace it with a plain text field labeled Phone.
Does Leadpages have a lightbox?
The pop-up is Leadpages' lightbox: when its full code is on the page, the form opens in an overlay above the content. If it opens in a new tab instead, only the URL was used or the script part of the code is missing.
